DS 9 E-Tense 4×4 360 First Look: A 360-PS Plug-In Saloon With A 5.6-Second Sprint

DS's flagship saloon stood on the Paris stand in dark plum, priced from €68,500 to €86,650 in France. DS launched a pricier Opéra Première edition at the same show.

The DS 9 E-TENSE 4×4 360 makes 360 PS and reaches 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. DS’s launch text gives it a 200 hp four-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors. One of 110 hp sits in the gearbox at the front, and one of 113 hp drives the rear axle, under an intelligent four-wheel drive.

The DS 9 is DS’s biggest car, and the grille is a very large diamond-pattern panel to match. The one on the DS stand in Hall 4 at the Paris Motor Show is a deep plum that goes almost black under the lights. The plate on the bumper reads “DS 9 E-TENSE 4×4 360”.

We filmed it at the show and photographed it on 17 October 2022, the press day according to the organiser. The video runs 4 minutes 47 seconds and was uploaded on 3 November as “2023 DS 9 E-TENSE 4X4 360 Hybrid”. Most of it is music.

Performance Badges And A Poissy Build

The text read out in the video comes from DS’s launch material for the DS 9 E-TENSE 4×4 360 and the E-TENSE 250. DS limits the 4×4 360’s top speed to 250 km/h electronically, and allows 140 km/h on electric power alone.

The 4×4 360 has exclusive 20-inch “Munich” wheels, DS Performance brake calipers and DS Performance badges on the nose and the boot lid. DS said the mechanical parts were assembled at its Poissy plant in France.

The catch is the battery. The 4×4 360’s 11.9 kWh gives 47 km of electric range combined, or 52 km in the city, according to DS’s text. The E-TENSE 250 gets a new 15.6 kWh battery with up to 70 km on the WLTP urban cycle, or 61 km combined.

The Opéra Première Edition

DS used the show to launch the DS 9 Opéra Première, a special edition based on the Rivoli+ trim with all options as standard. It has a Nappa leather interior in Gris Perle and a new paint called Whisper.

L’argus described the show car as built in China and converted in France in its 360 PS form. It put the price “close to €90,000”.

The dark-plum DS 9 in our photographs carries no Opéra Première badge, so the edition may have been a different DS 9 on the stand.

From €68,500 To €86,650 In France

L’argus’s DS 9 price list of 9 June 2022 gives these prices for the plug-in versions, in euros including VAT.

At launch in February 2022, DS had quoted €67,500 and €70,400 for the same two trims, according to Motorsactu. L’argus said in June that prices had risen by €1,000.

Our Take: Priced Against BMW And Audi

The DS 9 4×4 360 only makes sense against its German rivals, and Motor1 France drew that line itself. It set the Opéra Première against the BMW 545e xDrive from €74,500 and the Audi A6 55 TFSI e Competition from €71,170.

On that yardstick the Rivoli+ at €71,400 sits level with the Audi and €3,100 under the BMW, with 360 PS and 5.6 seconds to 100 km/h. The Opéra Première at €86,650 is €12,150 above the BMW.

DS raised prices by €1,000 in June, then launched the Opéra Première €15,250 above the Rivoli+ 4×4 360. On price, the Rivoli+ is the DS 9 that holds its own against the Germans.
