The ID.5 on the Volkswagen stand at Automesse Salzburg 2023 was the GTX, with two motors, all-wheel drive and 220 kW (299 PS). The card next to the car reads “ID.5 GTX 4MOTION 220 kW”. VW Österreich told futurezone in November 2021 that the GTX reaches 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and tops out at 180 km/h.
Around it stood a red Golf with a “Der neue Golf Rabbit 45” sign, a black Polo and a silver ID.4. We filmed it on Saturday 25 March 2023, the middle day of the 24 to 26 March fair. We uploaded the video on 20 April as “All NEW 2023 Volkswagen ID.5 Coupe – FIRST LOOK Interior, Exterior”.
An ID.4 With A Sloping Roof
The ID.5 is the ID.4’s sloping-roof sibling. The black paint makes the face look busy. A slim light bar crosses the nose, a large VW badge sits in the middle and vents flank a deep bumper.
The AUTO TV walkaround describes a coupe-like crossover with clean lines, LED lights and an illuminated VW badge. Inside, it points to a spacious cabin and a floating centre console with the infotainment and climate controls. There is a configurable digital cluster, and the upholstery uses eco-friendly materials.
It adds DC fast charging from 5 to 80 per cent in about 30 minutes and VW’s IQ.Drive assistance with Travel Assist. The walkaround’s battery sizes, ranges in miles, Electrify America charging deal and dollar price are US-market figures, so the numbers here are VW Austria’s.
€57,500 Expected For The GTX
VW Austria’s prices date from the pre-sale that opened in November 2021. It quoted the ID.5 from €50,080 and said the GTX was expected to start at €57,500 (futurezone, 24 Nov 2021, including VAT). That is a gap of €7,420.
VW Germany’s launch list of the time started lower, with the ID.5 Pro from €46,515, according to the same report.
Speed Bought With Range
The GTX gives up range for speed. VW Austria quoted 497 km WLTP for the GTX against 540 km for the ID.5 Pro and Pro Performance, which is 43 km less.
In return the sprint to 100 km/h drops to 6.3 seconds, from the 10.4 seconds futurezone quotes for the standard ID.5. All versions share a 77 kWh battery. The Pro makes 128 kW (174 PS) and the Pro Performance 150 kW (204 PS).

Our Take: A GTX For A Hesitant Crowd
The AUTO TV walkaround presents the ID.5 as a stylish electric crossover with a coupe roofline, four doors and a roomy cabin.
It stood in a hesitant hall. Leadersnet reported on 26 March 2023 that Salzburg’s private buyers were wary of electric cars, with range, price and charging at home as the usual objections.
The card says the car on the stand was the GTX, and on paper that version delivers. Its 220 kW, 6.3 seconds and 497 km are numbers a Golf Rabbit 45 owner would notice.
