Porsche Cayenne Electric First Look: The Glowing Prototype That Charges Without A Cable

Porsche used the prototype to show its 11 kW floor-plate charger at IAA Mobility. The production Cayenne Electric followed in November, from €105,200 in Germany.

Porsche brought a Cayenne Electric to IAA Mobility to show that an electric SUV can charge without a cable. The system, called Porsche Wireless Charging, delivers up to 11 kW with up to 90 per cent efficiency from grid to battery, according to Porsche’s release of 4 September 2025.

We photographed the prototype on the Porsche stand on 8 September, and our AUTO TV video went online the next day. Our IAA Mobility 2025 report covers the other cars we photographed at the show.

A 50 kg Plate On The Garage Floor

The charging unit is a floor plate that measures 117 by 78 by 6 centimetres and weighs about 50 kg, Porsche says. The car parks over it, and the receiver in the underbody picks up the energy.

Porsche describes it as a one-box design. Apart from the supply cable, everything sits inside the plate, so there is no wall box and no separate control unit. Porsche’s September release put the start of plate sales in 2026, at Porsche Centres and in the Porsche Shop, Europe first.

Ultra-wideband radio finds the car’s position above the plate, and the surround-view cameras help the driver line up. The plate detects foreign objects and living beings and stops charging if one is on it. It has an LTE and WLAN module for software updates and ties into the My Porsche app.

Paint That Glows From Blue To Violet

The prototype wears an electroluminescent paint that glows under alternating voltage. Porsche says it uses more than 25 thin base layers and more than 15 clear-coat layers in five tones from blue to violet. In the photograph the car lights up in blue and violet against a dark stand.

The AUTO TV video describes the same paint and the floor plate, and says the new electric Cayenne will be the first car to get the system.

No Faster Than A Cable

At 11 kW, Porsche’s wireless system matches a wired AC charger. It removes the plugging in. It does not make an overnight charge faster.

The Production Car: 642 km And 400 kW

Porsche premiered the production Cayenne Electric digitally on 19 November 2025. electrive reports a 113 kWh battery, about 108 kWh net, and up to 642 km of WLTP range. Peak DC charging is 400 kW, and a 10 to 80 per cent charge takes under 16 minutes in the best case.

The Cayenne Electric makes 300 kW, or 325 kW with Launch Control, and 835 Nm. Wireless charging at 11 kW is an option on the car. In Germany, electrive lists the Cayenne Electric at €105,200 and the Turbo Electric at €165,500.

Our Take: Convenience Is The Selling Point

The video calls the paint job showmanship and keeps its attention on the plate and the 11 kW figure.

Our video presents wireless charging as the answer to the biggest barrier to electric cars, which we call convenience. We point to Porsche’s own figure that around 75 per cent of charging in an all-electric Porsche happens at home, and say that makes a pad in the garage the logical next step.
