Tesla Model 3 Highland First Look: The Facelift Tesla Brought To Munich, From €42,990

Tesla's refreshed Model 3 cuts drag to 0.219, swaps the stalks for buttons and adds a rear screen. Its German price went live three days before it stood on Tesla's IAA stand.

Tesla’s refreshed Model 3, known inside the company as Highland, was listed in Tesla’s German configurator from €42,990 for the rear-wheel-drive car on 1 September 2023, according to electrive. Days later it stood on Tesla’s stand at IAA Mobility in Munich.

We filmed the blue car there on the show days. It sits on a white plinth under a lit frame, with a “Model 3” plate and the web address below it.

A Sharper Face, A Slipperier Shape

The AUTO TV walkaround says the front is edgier, with cleaner character lines and a new LED daytime-running-light signature. Our photograph shows that signature curling round each lamp, with a Tesla badge on the bonnet.

At the rear, electrive says “Tesla” lettering replaces the badge and the continuous LED strip is gone. The drag coefficient falls to 0.219. Two new paints, Ultra Red and Stealth Grey, cost €2,000 extra each.

Electrek, writing on 4 September 2023, called the Tesla booth “very understated”. Its writer judged that the exterior changes are “not massive” and that the car looks more aggressive.

Inside, Buttons Replace The Stalks

The bigger changes are in the cabin. According to electrive, the indicators and the gear selector move from column stalks to buttons, rear passengers get a new eight-inch display and the seats are ventilated.

The AUTO TV walkaround describes a wraparound lounge look with aluminium and fabric materials, ambient lighting across the whole interior and acoustic glass. The central screen keeps its 15.4-inch size, and the walkaround says its bezels are slimmer.

Range, Power And A Lower Top Speed

The WLTP range is 513 km for the rear-wheel-drive car and 629 km for the all-wheel-drive one, both on 19-inch wheels, according to electrive. On 18-inch wheels, Tesla’s estimates rise to 554 km and 678 km. Consumption falls from 14.4 to 13.2 kWh per 100 km.

The base car has 208 kW and the long-range version 363 kW. The car is 4.72 m long, 2.09 m wide with its mirrors and 1.44 m high, and electrive gives it 682 litres of luggage space.

The trade-off is top speed, which falls to 201 km/h, from 225 and 233 km/h on the earlier cars, according to electrive.

Prices And Deliveries

In Germany the rear-wheel-drive car cost €42,990 and the all-wheel-drive version €51,990, according to electrive on 1 September 2023. Tesla subtracts the manufacturer’s share of the EV bonus from the displayed price, so the list price is €2,678 higher.

Deliveries in Europe were due to start in October 2023. Electrek noted that the car was not yet on sale in North America, because it was built only in Shanghai.

Our Take

The AUTO TV walkaround treats the Highland as a refresh meant to keep existing owners and win new ones. That reading fits the stand. The exterior is a careful edit, and the interior carries the larger changes.

So the reason to look again is inside, where buttons replace the stalks and rear passengers get their own screen. Read our IAA 2023 report for how the car sat among the show’s concepts, and our Lucid Air piece for the other priced car in Munich.
