smart has brought back the two-seat city car. The #2, a world premiere in Paris on Monday, is 2,746 mm long, all-electric and built on the new ECA platform, and in France it starts at €19,990.

When the last fortwo EQ came off the line in spring 2024, the tiny two-seater looked finished. The #2 keeps that formula and adds a few clever ideas of its own.

A Tailgate That Becomes A Seat

The Mercedes-Benz design team kept the wheels pushed to the corners, reinterpreted the “floating roof” and shaped the lights like the smart logo. The safety cell is the familiar Tridion, now in its fourth generation.

The cleverest detail is at the back. The split tailgate lets the glass open on its own, and the lower flap folds down into a loading platform, or a seat rated to 120 kg.

Two Seats, 305 Litres

The cockpit is S-shaped, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, an 8.8-inch driver display, bench-style seating and a “smart Pillar” mount for gadgets. The boot holds 305 litres, or up to 527. Premium versions add a fixed glass roof, heated seats and a seven-speaker Sennheiser system.

Rear-Wheel Drive And A Tight Turning Circle

A 60 kW (82 PS) motor drives the rear wheels, with 130 Nm. The turning circle is 6.95 m, which is the number that counts in a narrow street.

The 35.8 kWh LFP battery is targeted at up to 290 km WLTP. DC charging reaches 65 kW (10–80% in 20 minutes), and AC charging is 11 kW from Pure+. smart hasn’t published top speed or acceleration yet, and all figures are preliminary while the car is in EU homologation.

What It Costs

It is also on show at Auto Zürich 2026, 5–8 November; our Auto Zürich 2026 guide has the details.

French prices run from €19,990 to €25,690 across the four versions, according to L’argus, and smart France has confirmed the Pure at €19,990.

Source: L’argus, 12 Oct 2026. smart France confirms the Pure at €19,990 (Automobile Propre, 12 Oct 2026). The Pure+, Premium and Couture Edition prices are the same as the German list (€19,990 to €25,690), and final French prices for those three are still to be confirmed.

Binding orders opened across Europe on 13 October. Deliveries follow homologation, with full availability in 2027.

“It marks the return of a true automotive icon, reimagined for the cities of today.”

Our Take

Next to everything else in the Paris halls, 2.75 metres looks tiny. In a Swiss city centre, where parking is tight and charged by the hour, that’s the whole point, and the split tailgate is the clever detail.

The open question is range, because 290 km is still a target until the car is homologated. Watch for that figure, and for the #2 at Auto Zürich 2026 next month. The rest of Paris is in our Paris Motor Show 2026 hub.
